MY STORY

Marisa Ray is a self-taught artist whose creative life has always extended across multiple disciplines. Born in Los Angeles, she spent half of her life in California, where she explored illustration, theater, music,songwriting, and visual art. Creativity has remained a constant throughout her life, continually finding new forms of expression.
Early on, she would see that it could be done. Her grandfather was a professional commercial artist, and watching him work gave Ray a subconscious sense that a life built around creativity was possible. His example stayed with her, even as visual art eventually took a back seat to other creative pursuits. She discovered an interest and ability in illustration early in life, receiving recognition for her work before turning her attention to other creative paths.
During high school in California, Ray became involved in theater, where she discovered a love of storytelling and performance and received several awards for her work, including being recognized as “Most Likely to Succeed.” She eventually left theater to focus on singing and songwriting, studying music and pursuing a career as a songwriter and performer. That path eventually led her to Nashville, where she spent years
immersed in the music world.
In 2003, Ray stepped away from music and returned to visual art. What began as an exploration of painting soon became a new direction in her creative life. She found herself drawn to the process and possibilities of painting, and over time it became the foundation of her life as an artist.
Ray intentionally chose to remain self-taught in art. Her experience with formal musical knowledge had shown her that while knowledge can provide valuable tools, it can also create expectations and limitations that sometimes interfere with instinct and creativity. With painting, she wanted the freedom to discover her own way of working through experimentation, curiosity, and persistence.
As an independent artist, Ray regularly exhibits her work throughout the United States in juried fine art shows. Her work has received multiple awards and is part of a permanent installation at East Tennessee Children’s Hospital.
Today, Ray continues to follow a creative path that has taken her through several artistic worlds. Her years in music taught her the power of emotional expression, while theater deepened her understanding of storytelling and connection. Painting gave her a way to bring those experiences together visually. After a lifetime of exploring different forms of creativity, she continues to follow the work wherever it leads. She is currently based in Knoxville, Tennessee.
